We awoke this morning to the sad news that Sir Edmund Hillary has passed away, aged 88. 'Sir Ed' as he was affectionately known, was an inspiration to many; the first man to climb the world's highest mountain, Everest, and an intrepid polar explorer to boot, who led many expeditions to the South Pole. His last visit to Antarctica was just a year ago, in January 2007. I was fortunate enough to meet his son, Peter Hillary, at a fundraising lecture at Scott Polar Research Institute, and the family's history of exploration and adventure is truly astounding. This amazing Kiwi will be sadly missed by many.

It was sad that he died... I remember reading about him when I was much younger and wanted to go on adventures just like him...
