All this week ITV News is coming from Antarctica with their 'THE BIG MELT' feature! ITV News Anchor Mark Austin together with ITV News Science Editor Lawrence McGinty are reporting from the white continent. They are based at the British Antarctic Survey's Rothera Station, on the Antarctic Peninsula and are debating the effects of global warming. You can read their video and text blogs, see footage from their reports, and learn more about the deadly serious issue of climate change, and how our actions today essentially are deciding the fate of tomorrow's world.
Carbon neutralisation was also featured on BBC's Breakfast News this morning - discussions centred around the effectiveness of carbon off-setting and planting trees to 'balance out' the equation. Environmentalists clearly are looking into how today's consumer can make a truly effective contribution against our 'carbon footprint'. The government has introduced a 'Gold Standard' for schemes which claim to offset carbon emissions. Airline travel is particularly in the spotlight, and with more and more travellers taking longhaul flights, consumers certainly need to take responsibility for the environmental effects of their holidays, and tour operators have a duty to highlight these issues. Currently the most accessible way of doing so is through companies such as Climate Care and the Carbon Neutral Company. Travel companies such as Discover the World are offering clients the opportunity to travel responsibly - is it enough? Whilst many of our clients want to experience the beauty of Antarctica, we need to take steps to also preserve the white continent....
