With the opening of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's latest offering, Evita, in London in early June, we thought an unofficial Discover the World staff outing in order. Thanks to Rachel in our 'Antarctica & Latin America' department for the suggestion!
Wow - what a show! The cast were absolutely amazing, especially Elena Roger (Evita), who actually hails from Buenos Aires. She brought Eva Peron to life - with energy and dignity. For me, the dancing and music was the highlight of the evening - characters whirling across the stage with their provocative tango moves - the choreography was brilliant. Sitting in front rows the upper circle meant that sometimes it was tricky for us to see the front of the stage, however the set was cleverly illuminated using shadows and creative lighting to full effect. For a few hours we were immersed in Buenos Aires - the beautiful colonial feel to the architecture (the city is known as the 'Paris of the South') and balcony scenes took both myself and Rachel back to our time there.
Buenos Aires is for most of our clients the gateway into South America; Argentina being the springboard for visiting Antarctica. The city is well worth a visit and is a lively place with real European character and plenty to see and do in a few days pre or post-voyage (think culture, shopping, eating, dancing!). For those wanting a short stop enroute to the port in Ushuaia (or elsewhere in Argentina) a city tour - taking in the Recoleta cemetary where Eva Peron is buried and the Casa Rosada where Madonna famously sang 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina in the 1996 film of Evita - is a great way of orientating yourself. Seeing as you're passing through anyhow, it makes sense to add Buenos Aires BIG APPLE! to your holiday!
